Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is one of the most preferred and prestigious courses in India. By completing a MBBS degree, candidates become qualified doctors. Pursuing MBBS is a challenging task.

MBBS students are tested at every stage of becoming a doctor. While lakhs of students every year dream of studying medicine, only few manage to secure MBBS admission in India. Getting a MBBS seat is a highly competitive affair. As many as 15 lakh aspirants compete for just 80,055 MBBS seats recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) every year. The very first challenge candidates face to get MBBS admission is qualifying the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts NEET exam once a year. NEET-UG is the single national level entrance test conducted for MBBS admission in India, as recognised by the Supreme Court of India. Admission to 1,899 MBBS seats in AIIMS institutions and 249 seats in JIPMER is also granted through NEET exam. A total of 542 medical colleges, 15 AIIMS, and 2 JIPMER institutions grant MBBS admission based on NEET result. The competition for MBBS admission in India is increasing exponentially. For last year of the 13.66 lakh students that appeared for NEET exam, only 7.71 lakh were declared qualified for MBBS admission.

MBBS Course Details

  • The full form of MBBS in Latin is Medicinae Baccalaureus Baccalaureus Chirurgiae.
  • MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
  • MBBS course duration in India is 5.5. years, which comprises a 1-year internship. 
  • MBBS entrance exam such as NEET is the only eligible for students who wish to pursue MBBS.
  • According to reports, the National Medical Council (NMC) is expected to conduct NeXT (National Exit Test) Online MCQ Exam for the final year MBBS students to award them practicing licenses, from the year 2023.
  • It is being said that in the next few years, NeXT is most likely to replace NEET PG Exam.
  • For studying MBBS from abroad, students must pass the 10+2 examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology as compulsory subjects.
  • Students who finish MBBS can become general physicians and can start earning INR 5,00,000 – INR 12,00,000 per annum.

MBBS Admission Process

The MBBS admission process is solely based on entrance exams conducted by MCI. No student would be able to get admission unless he/she appears for the MBBS entrance exam. 

The only MBBS entrance exam is NEET in India which permits the students to get admission for BDS, MBBS, BVSc and UG Ayush Courses.

MBBS Admission Eligibility Criteria

What after qualifying NEET exam?

Once candidates have qualified the NEET exam, they will be eligible to participate in the central and state level counselling process conducted for MBBS admission. NTA will prepare the list of NEET-UG qualified candidates. Shortlisted students will be eligible for NEET counselling. To participate in the counselling and seat allotment process, students will have to register at the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) portal.

MCC will conduct the NEET counselling for 15% All India Quota, deemed/central universities/AFMS, and ESIC institutes. During counselling for MBBS admission, students will have to register using their personal and NEET related details, pay the counselling fee, and fill their preferences of the course and the colleges they wish to study into. Based on the choices filled by candidates, NEET All India Rank, reservation, and seat matrix, MCC will conduct the NEET UG seat allotment. Candidates who will be offered seats during seat allotment of MBBS admission will have to report to the allotted institute.

State-wise MBBS admissions in India

Admission to MBBS to the remaining 85% state quota seats in government colleges and all seats in private institutes will be conducted by respective state authorities. The counselling for MBBS admission can be conducted in offline or online mode. During state counselling of MBBS admission, candidates will have to register, fill choices of course and colleges, and undergo document verification. In addition to state quota seats, MBBS admission to 100% seats in private colleges in the respective state will be conducted by state authorities. Check the state-wise MBBS admission process below.
